Merchants Delivery was established in 1921 by E. W. Eastman. Originally, the business functioned as a local merchant delivery service before performing local and long-distance residential moves. E.W. Eastman’s son, A. W. Eastman, added an IH/Navistar truck dealership, rental, and leasing company to the family’s portfolio after coming home from World War II. Jim Eastman took over as president in 1982 and sold the truck leasing company and dealership.
Jim Eastman replaced the sold businesses by founding Archives, a records storage company, and Taskmasters, a premier moving service. Jennifer Eastman (great-granddaughter of founder E.W. Eastman) joined the company in 1996 as company controller. In 2014, she took the reins from her father and became the fourth generation leader and first female president of Merchants. Two Men And A Truck began at the start of the 1980s by two high school kids, brothers Brig and Jon Sorber. Today, with over 35 years of experience, the business has expanded to more than 350 locations around the globe. The two brothers initially helped people in Lansing, Michigan, relocate with an old pickup truck. Their mother, Mary Ellen Sheets, created a logo and ran it weekly in a community newspaper. The original logo remains on every truck, sign, and advertisement.
Sheets worked full-time processing data for the State of Michigan, but she didn’t halt operations for Two Men And A Truck just because her boys left for university. In 1985, she spent $350 (the only capital Sheets ever put into the company) on a 14-foot truck and employed two movers.
Michigan State University put Sheets on a graduate business panel in 1988, where another panelist recommended she franchise Two Men And A Truck. Melanie Bergeron, Sheets’ daughter, became the president once the franchise accumulated 39 franchises. Brig and Jon returned in the mid-1990s to help their mother.
