What is the story behind the Horlick Malted Milk Factory?
It’s true that malted milk was produced here for decades! In fact, the founders of Horlicks Malted Milk, William and James Horlick, actually INVENTED malted milk. After emigrating to the US from England, the brothers set up shop here in Racine due to our abundant supply of fresh spring water. Horlicks Malted Milk was relied on for nutrition at home, rations on the front lines and even used as a provision on North and South Pole expeditions. But most people remember Horlicks Malted Milk as a satisfying and tasty malt shop treat.
Today, the cream city brick buildings of the Horlick Malted Milk complex are being reinvigorated for adaptive reuse as community and retail spaces and apartment buildings. Now everyone can live the sweet life at Belle City Square.
